A girlfriend of mine told me about the Ribbon Cake Pull and I knew I had to do it! Matt and I decided we did not want to do a garter toss or bouquet toss for our wedding. We always felt really awkward at other weddings when we were single and were 'encouraged' by others to participate in the garter/bouquet toss.
I found a great article on Southern Weddings about the cake pull and it got me even more excited to do this! Our wedding cake baker is a friend of our family and she thought I was crazy when I asked her to put these ribbons and charms underneath our cake. However after it al came together she thought it was really special!
I ordered a bunch of charms off of Etsy. A week before the wedding my Mom and I tied all of the ribbons to the charms (not as easy as it sounds... the ribbons kept falling off!). We met with Stella (the baker) and asked her if it was possible. She said she would try, but we weren't sure if the cake pull would be possible until the wedding day.
There are several different ways to do the cake pull.
One is to attach the fortune at the end of the ribbon - so when the ladies pull out the ribbon they have the charm and the fortune together. THIS WAS HARD! They do make ribbons and charms with their fortune attached - but those were expensive! Instead I made a sign with all of the charms that we had. We put the sign next to the cake - and this worked out even better than if the charms had their fortunes attached.
The DJ called all the single ladies inside for the cake pull. No one had any idea what this was! It was so fun to see their excitement and confusion! Once all of the charms were pulled out someone (I think Matt's cousin Christine) read off each of the fortunes. THIS WAS AWESOME! Everyone held up their charm and then once the fortune was read they would laugh or Ooo and Ahh. It was so much fun!
I am really happy this went over so well!!!
Great idea ;)
